If you use your epilator on a regular basis then you know just how great these little machines can be. They are very reliable and seem to be able to go on forever; I know of several people who have had their epilator for several years. It’s not just because they are too mean to buy a new one, it’s that these devices can and do last a very long time.

But sometimes I do believe we take them for granted, especially when it comes to hygiene. We just take them out of the draw, switch them on and of we go. But how many of use give our epilators a regular clean?

You often hear about people who suffer from ingrowing hair or break out in a rash or red bumps after using an epilator. By not keeping your epilator clean you could cause these conditions to become worse or even become infected.

I think cleanliness is very important when epilating. It only takes a couple of minutes to clean your epilator after each use. A clean epilator will go along way to help you avoid developing skin rashes and nasty red bumps that some women suffer from when epilating .

Remove the cover of your epilator and set it to one side on a clean sheet of paper. Remove the head from the body of the epilator, and while rotating the epilator head.

A good tip is to use a can of compressed air to blow out any lose hairs. (You can buy these from any photographic stores). Use the cleaning brush that comes supplied with your epilator, if you do not have one then a toothbrush makes a great alternative, and gently brush the tweezers heads to remove any remaining hairs. (Make sure you do not forget to clean the cover of your epilator).

If you have a wet and dry epilator that can be immersed in water then you can give it a wash with some anti-bacterial soap. If the instructions allow then I like to soak the head of the epilator over night in an anti-bacterial solution. When finished, make sure the components are completely dry, and then you may re-assemble your epilator. Don’t forget to clean any epilator attachments that you may also use.

By keeping to a regular regime of cleaning your epilator every time you use it, will hopefully, help you to cut down the chances of developing those red bumps and rashes that may develop. Also, if you are prone to ingrowing hair then keeping your epilator clean can help stop those becoming infected.

What are ingrowing hairs?

Ingrown hairs are basically hairs that are trapped under you skin. They cannot break through the surface of you skin and start growing internally. This can cause unsightly black lumps to appear on the surface of your skin. They can make your skin look very unsightly, and can be very itchy and in some cases can become infected.

How to Avoid epilator ingrown hair

Well they do say prevention is better than a cure so in that respect try to follow a strict regime of skin care every time you use your epilator. Probably the best way to avoid ingrown hair is to exfoliate your skin. This applies whether you are using an epilator, shaving or waxing. Exfoliating helps remove your dead skin and keeps the skin pores open, thus helping the hair to break free of the skin surface far more easily.

Epilator ingrown hair  products

You can find a wide variety of creams and devices on the market that are specifically designed to exfoliate your skin. There are even recipes on the net to make your own exfoliating creams.  It is probably best to choose one that suits your skin type as some scrubs can be more abrasive than others. Make sure you follow the instructions on the packet. You must pay particular attention to any steps they advise you to take before and after using these products.

Apart from creams there are many other types of exfoliating products on the market. For example you can buy exfoliating sponges, gloves and pads These may make a good alternative for those who may not be able to use creams.

Keep your epilator clean

It is also a good idea to Keep your epilator clean. This will not stop ingrowing hairs but will help prevent any that you do may have from becoming  infected.

The skin under your armpits is not as tight as the skin on your arms and legs. This makes it slightly more awkward for the epilator to grab those hairs and do its job.  There are one or two techniques you can use to pull your skin tight and make epilating far easier.

If you are a young Olympic athlete you could swing from a bar with one hand and use your epilator with the other. But I find the two methods listed below tend to work just as good.

First find out if your epilator came with a epilating cap designed to be used to for this purpose if so then try using it it may help.

Lift the arm you intend to epilate and place it behind your head. Then use your other hand to epilate your under arms.

Raise the arm you intend to epilate and place the palm of your hand against a wall. This will help to stretch your under arm skin and will give you something to lean against preventing your arm from getting too tired.

Both these methods are designed to stretch you under am skin and make it as tight as possible.

Epilating your underarms can be awkward and it will probably take you several attempts before you become proficient. Don’t forget, if you have an underarm attachment then try using it. Also, if your epilator has a speed setting then use the slowest speed possible. Above all take your time and do not rush.

After you have finished epilating your underarms please do not use any alcohol based deodorants. These tend to sting, and make your eyes water and rude words come out your mouth. Also, do not forget to exfoliate after epilation. This will help prevent in growing hairs from forming.

If you can tolerate the pain involved you will benefit from weeks of smooth armpits and none of those black stubble marks you tend to get when you shave.

Most women want  silky smooth legs,  just like the woman on the advert who drops a silk scarf on her legs and it slides all the way down to her feet. Smooth legs are achievable but like most things in life you have to put effort in to gain the rewards.

Preparation.

First you need to prepare your legs before you start to use your epilator. If you have not already done so then please take a look at our epilator tips section. There you will find lots of useful advice on epilation.

Make sure the hairs on your legs are not too short and neither should they be too long. If they are too short your epilator will not be able to grab the hairs and will have difficulty pulling them out, resulting in a lot of missed hairs. Also, if the hairs on your legs are too long this will result in your epilating session being far more painful than it should be. Most good modern epilators can remove hair that is only 1 to 2 days in length.

It is best if your legs have had no creams or oils applied to them before you begin to epilate. This will also make it a lot harder for the epilator to successfully grab hold and remove the hairs. If necessary take a bath or shower before you begin.

Exfoliate

It may also be wise to ex-foliate your legs before and after your epilating session. Ex-foliating helps remove any dead cells on your skin and also helps clear the pores of your skin. Ex-foliating your skin regularly before using your epilator may help prevent ingrowing hairs that can be a problem for some people.

Technique

The technique you use to epilate your legs is entirely up to you. There is no correct way to do this. Some people like to start at the bottom of their legs, working against the direction of the hair, and slowly move the epilator up the leg. Others like to work in small circular motions either starting at the top working their way down or from the top of the leg working up. I think it is best to experiment to find out just what works best for you. Whatever technique you adopt make sure you pull the area of skin you are about to epilate nice and tight. This helps to smooth out your skin and makes it far easier for the epilator to grab hold of the hairs.

Don’t forget to use the fingers of your free hand to feel the skin to make sure you have not missed any stray hairs.

Make sure you hair is not too long

Pull or stretch the area of skin you intend to epilate; this will help smooth out the skin and make it far easier for the epilator to remove the hairs. This is especially important when you are epilating your under arms where the skin is far more loose than other areas of you body.

Exfoliate

Once you have finished epilating it is very important that you exfoliate your skin.  With any form of hair removal, especially with those that remove the hair from below the surface of the skin like waxing and epilating, there is a chance that when the hair starts to re-grow it gets trapped under the skins surface and becomes in-grown. Using some form of exfoliating system can help to prevent this.

Clean after use

Make sure you clean the epilator after every use. You can do this by detaching the head of the epilator from its body and washing the parts under running water. It may also be a good idea to use some anti bacterial solution to help remove any bugs that may be lurking. The Philips HP6576 rechargeable epilator is the flagship model in Philips satin Perfect range. The other two models, in this range, include the HP6572 satin perfect and the HP6570 Satin Perfect. The main difference between these epilators is that the HP6576 is cordless and comes exclusively supplied with some luxury tweezers. The nearest rival to the Philips HP6576 is the probably the Braun silk epil 7681. The Braun has the above features built into its body so there is no need to change caps. The Braun is slightly more expensive than the Philips but may be worth paying the extra for the convenience.

Conclusion.

The Best epilator 2010 award should, in my opinion , go to the Braun 7381, belonging to the Braun silk epil range. This is a cordless rechargeable epilator that can be used in the bath or shower. It has some great features, that you will actually use, and is great at removing those short awkward hairs and is very easy to use.

Smart Light.

This is a quite intense bright white light that is very useful for highlighting those small fine hairs or those stray hairs that can easily be overlooked. The light also helps prevent shadows from the epilator obscuring your view while you epilate. In my opinion, it really is such a useful feature that, you will wonder how you managed to live without it. I can also this see being emulated by others.

Pivoting Head.

Most women, unlike the super models you see in the glossy magazines, do not have a perfect body. We all have the odd lump or bump here or there. To combat this, Braun have designed the head of this epilator to pivot. If you have used a modern razor then you should have a good idea of how it works. By being able to follow the contours of your body, you are able to remove those hairs that are otherwise hard to get at, without having to go over the same bit of skin several times. This pivoting head is great when epilating your underarms and around your knees.

Massaging Rollers.

Do you really want a massage while you epilate? This really does sound like one of those features added on by manufactures that sound great but ends up being nothing more than a gimmick. I am happy to say this is not so in this particular case. These high frequency rollers are designed to stimulate your skin while you epilate and so relieving some of the discomfort felt. Does it work? From what I can gather, yes it does. Obviously, some women will derive more benefit from this than others but at least it’s a step in the right direction to reduce epilator discomfort.

Comfort Setting.

We can all do with a little comfort now and again, but the comfort setting on this Braun silk epil is really a fancy name for the speed setting. There are, in effect, two settings, Braun likes to call these: “fast” and “soft” or extra gentle and extra efficient. I just call them fast and slow. But they do come in useful. If, for example, you have just started epilating, then I would user the “soft” option. This setting can also be used when epilating your under arms or bikini line. When you are more comfortable with using your epilator, or when you want to epilate larger areas, then use the “fast” setting.

Softlift Tips.

This can be a bit of a tongue twister. These are basically little nodules on the head of the best epilator. Their job is to lift up any flat lying hairs and guide them into the path of the tweezers. Without these tips, the epilator would just glide over most flat lying hairs, leaving you with lots of hairs that you would probably have to spend more time on removing individually.

Unlike some of the cheaper epilators, the Braun Silk epil range have a good quality battery that is powerful enough to actually be of use. The epilator is excellent at holding its charge which is helpful as you cannot use the epilator while it is charging. Being cordless gives you freedom from those tangled wires, running out of batteries or having to find a socket close enough to where you actually want to use your epilator.

40 Tweezers.

The Braun 7381 is equipped with 40 “winglet” tweezers that trap and remove your hair while rotating extremely quickly. You can see this in action in the video above.  Other manufacturers have epilators with more tweezers but Braun say theirs can remove more hair in a single stoke than any other epilator. Maybe this is down to quality over quantity. But Brauns claims really do seem to stand up.

Wet & Dry epilator

The Braun 7381 is a wet and dry epilator that can be safely used while completely immersed in water. Using your epilator while taking a bath can help to reduce the discomfort some people feel while epilating. Relaxing in a warm bath does seem to help. An independent  survey found that over half the women they asked preferred epilating in water and felt it  was also kinder to their skin. If you don’t fancy the idea of epilating in the bath, then you could try using this epilator while having a shower.

Best epilator 2010 Disadvantages

The only real disadvantage I can see with the Braun 7381 is that you cannot use it while it is being charged. So, if you forget to put it on charge and are in a hurry, you will have to wait for about an hour until it is re-charge.

This product is fantastic! It’s by far the best and most pain free epilator I’ve used (yes, I’m a guy – I use an epilator on my back and shoulders). The way the head can rotate is a new feature to me in the world of hair removal and I think this helps it get more hairs first time, which also means less pain as the skin gets less beaten up.

I was also pleased to find that it came with a trimmer head. The heads are easy to remove and change, and the trimmer/shaver head is great for other manscaping needs such as trimming chest hair, etc. This can all be done in the shower meaning it’s not creating an awful mess all over the bathroom floor… it just washes away down the plughole.

Reed This review is from: Braun Silk-épil Xpressive Pro 7681 Rechargeable Wet & Dry Epilator (Personal Care) Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Programme) Many years ago, I tried, in a fit of panic at a girlfriends house a few days stubble, to use her epilator : now, as a male, I can’t say this product is designed for me, but what I can say is that this is a gentle, adaptable, and useful product that does the trick (and it works well on men, as well). However, you should know that, like any epilator, it will burn on sensitive skin – as everything does – but this does lessen after the first few tries. It’s an effective, powerful, and gentle tool that removes unwanted body hair quickly and easily and leaves skin clear for around two weeks before any stray hairs return. You can wash it in water, which is very useful, and, overall, is a great product for what it is designed to do.

The main advantage of a Rechargeable epilator is the freedom of use. You are no longer restricted by a length of cord that in some cases may only be two or three meters in length. You will no longer have the inconvenience of tangling the cord around your legs or arms, while trying to epilate. You will also not be tied down to the nearest plug socket, and so can use your epilator where and when you like. If you by a wet and dry epilator you could even  use it  in the bath or shower.

How long does it hold a charge

Make sure you pay close attention to the battery life. Some of the cheaper models on sale often come  supplied with low quality batteries. This is one hidden area were the manufactures can save money without it being too noticeable.   These low quality batteries just may not be able to contain their charge  long enough for one epilating session. They may also just not have the power to do a proper job. It may be a false economy to by a cheap rechargeable epilator only to replace it 6 months latter when the battery gives up. You will be constantly recharging the epilator or using it with the wire plugged in to the mains, which defeats the reason for buying a cordless model.

How long does it take to charge?

It may also be worth paying attention to how long the epilator takes to charge. Some may take a few hours while others will be fully charged in under an hour. Also make sure the model you are looking at has a charging light which indicates when the epilator is fully charged. This may sound insignificant but you will find it very frustrating not knowing if the charge is complete or not.

Can a rechargeable epilator  be used with a cord?

O.K so you want a rechargeable epilator why would you then want to use it with a cord? If you have not used the epilator in some time, and then want to use it in a hurry, you may not have time to wait for it to charge up. If it can be used with the cord attached you can simply plug it in and use it straight away. Also it may run out of charge part way through while epilating. Instead of having to wait to charge up the battery just plug it back into the mains and carry on.  Just keep in mind that some models are designed to be charged on a charging stand and so cannot be used while plugged in to the mains.

Some rechargeable epilators just do not have the power to perform.

Once again some of the cheaper rechargeable epilators just will not have the power to remove your hairs. These may struggle if you have very coarse or thick body hair. Take a look at the reviews to make sure the model you are considering has the power it needs to do a good job.
